Description
I was not there when Mrs. Turva saw her son Dave hanging in his bedroom. I'd been in the house about twelve years prior, but when Mrs. Turva ran choking from Dave's bedroom, which she had not completely entered, after seeing some grotesque mannequin hanging in his closet, its head at a menacing upward angle, I was not there. She ran to the patio where she threw up into the pool. I was less than thirty miles away, I've determined, on my way home from work relaxing to a news broadcast at about the moment Mrs. Turva saw the remains of her lunch sinking in her pool, the puke in the well-maintained pool representing on an incredibly small scale the unacceptable incongruity in her son's bedroom, the prank by a man who was not a prankster, the Hollywood set constructed in her son's bedroom without her knowledge, her son acting dead, her son a Hollywood actor without her knowledge. She had not known him, her own son. She was disgusted by herself. Her body, her insides, tried to get away from her. She ran out the screen door of the patio away from her house, which was dead, to her neighbor's. She'd known something was wrong and could now feel the death of her home in her fingers and face, a weightlessness and tingling, the home she had not realized was alive, whose life she had taken for granted. They'd have to move. Sell the furniture. Burn it. Everything. I'd liked Mrs. Turva's house as a kid. Much more than I liked Mrs. Turva or Dave. She was a busybody with a bubble butt and dirty toenails; he was a humorless gun collector who was either sleeping in or reading a magazine close to his face. He muttered a reply when Stan asked him something. The only thing I remember him ever saying to me: "Don't you have a home?"
